What is Secure Desk

 

Secure Desk is a software that gives you the ability to create your own Windows Desktop or customized Toolbars to launch quickly your favourite programs, websites and documents.

 

Secure Desk also restricts unwanted access to your PC within a few mouse clicks

With Secure Desk you can:

 

·         Quickly secure your PC for public and/or restricted access to applications (e.g. for computers used in: Internet Cafes, Callcenters, Offices etc.)

 

·         Easily build your own and different Windows Desktops by adding programs, banners, links, documents etc.

Getting Started

 

 

 

Installing Secure Desk

 

Double Click on the SecureDesk.msi file

 

Follow the instructions on the screen

 

Read the License Agreement and click I Accept

 

Go trough the rest of the installation procedure

 

Registering Secure Desk

 

You can test Secure Desk for 30 days with unlimited functionality, but after this period you must register Secure Desk to continue to use the product.

How to get the Requestcode:

 

Start Secure Desk Editor and on the Tools menu point to Registration

 

How to enter the Registrationcode:

 

Start Secure Desk Editor and on the Tools menu point to Registration

 

Enter the Registrationcode according to your Requestcode then click Register

 

 

 

Notes: 

 

Keep request code and registration code in a safe place!

 

If you make major hardware changes to your PC you must register Secure Desk again. No additional fees will be charged.

 

Secure Desk does not and will never contain Spyware. The hardware configuration of your PC will be accessed only to generate your request code.

 

Please note that the complete registration process could take up to 2 weeks, from sending your request code, getting payment confirmation to sending back the registration code to you.

 


 

Secure Desk Editor

 

 

 

 

 

Overview

 

With Secure Desk editor you can easily create your own Windows Desktops or Toolbars to quickly access your favourite programs, websites or documents or to restrict the Users of your Computer to use only the programs you place on your Secure Desk.

 

With Secure Desk Editor you can easily setup restricted access to your PC as:

Disabling Administrative Tasks,  Disabling Task Manager, Disabling Hard Disk access etc.

 

Secure Desk allows also to restrict access to Internet Explorer features!

Appearance and Behaviour

Position from Left, Position from Top

 

            Specify the start position of your Desktop or Toolbar

 

Width, Height

 

            Specify width and height of your Desktop or Toolbar

 

Background Picture

 

            Specify the background picture of your Desktop or Toolbar

 

Background Color

 

            Specify the background color of your Desktop or Toolbar

 

Text Color

 

Specify the descriptions text color of the Items you will add to your Desktop or  Toolbar

 

Display Full Screen

 

            Specify if you want your Desktop or Toolbar displayed full screen

 

Display Windowless

 

            Specify if your Desktop or Toolbar should have a title bar and close button

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

Applications and Links

Here you can add and edit programs, links, documents etc. that you want to have displayed on your Desktop.

 

You can also define Documents or Applications to be opened at Startup.

 

The grid (Your Desktop) represents a view of your Desktop or Toolbar. Every cell in the grid represents an application, a link, a website etc. and its position on the Desktop or Toolbar you are creating or editing.

 

 

·         To add an Application or Link double click the desired cell

 

·         To get extended functions (copy, paste, delete…) right click the desired cell

 

 

 

 

Add or Edit Applications or Links

Display Name

 

Specify the description that will be displayed on your Desktop or Toolbar to identify the selected application, link etc.

 

Program, Document or URL

 

Specify the application, link or Document you want to add to your Desktop or Toolbar.

 

            It can be everything, here just some examples:

 

e.g. A program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe

 

            e.g. A website: http://www.mywebsite.com

 

            e.g. A FTP server: ftp://ftp.myftp.com

 

            e.g. A folder in your system: C:\My Documents

 

            e.g. A drive on your computer: A:\

 

            e.g. A document on your computer: C:\My Documents\ Hello.doc

 

            e.g. A network share: \\MyServer\MyFolder\

 

Picture File Name or URL

 

Specify the Picture that should represent the Application, link etc. that you are about to add or edit to your Desktop or Toolbar

 

Note: if you leave blank Secure Desk will extract the Icon of the specified Document for you. You can also create a custom picture using Windows Icons: just click on create

 

Alignment:

 

Specify the alignment you want to have on the desktop, inside the cell representing the application, link etc. you specified. The default alignment is left

 

           


Display as Hyperlink

 

If you want to display a Hyperlink as on a Web page, without any picture just select this option.

 

Note: This feature does not work for applications

 

 

            Define Programs or Files to be opened at Startup

 

If you need to run documents or applications on startup you can add Startup Files in this section. Just browse for the desired files and add them to the List displayed.

 

 

 

Computer Security

 

Here you can specify the security options you need for your PC.

Computer Security is reset automatically once Secure Taskbar is closed

Note:

The Computer Security is set by Secure Taskbar loading a Secure Desk File.

 

 

Attention Windows XP,2000,NT Users!

 

Secure Desk needs read/write access to the Registry in order to secure your PC.

Therefore, the Windows User under which Secure Desk will run, should not be a “Restricted User”

 

 
 
 
Password to access Secure Desk Functions

 

Specify here the password to access Secure Desk functions once the Secure Taskbar is started.

Note: the default password is empty, the password will be saved with every Desktop or Toolbar you create and is therfore bound to the file saved
 
 
Windows Security Restrictions
 
No Administrative Tasks

 

Set this option, if the users of your PC, should not be able to access  any of  the Windows Administrative Functions: The Taskmanager is blocked, no Control Panel Items can be accessed, Printers cannot be added nor deleted etc.

 

 

Disable Logoff (Windows XP,2000,NT only)

 

Set this option if the users of your PC should not be able to logoff from Windows

 

Disable Shut Down (Windows XP,2000,NT only)

 

Set this option if the users of your PC should not be able to shut down Windows

 

Disable Change Password (Windows XP,2000,NT only)

 

Set this option if the users of your PC should not be able to change Windows password

 

Disable Lock Computer (Windows XP,2000,NT only)

 

Set this option if users of your PC should not be able to lock Windows

 

Completely Replace Windows Desktop

 

Set this option if Secure Desk should replace your Windows Desktop and Taskbar.

 


 
 
 
 
Disk and Network Security Restrictions
 
Disable Drive Access over Commandline

 

Set this option to avoid users accessing drives on your system by typing the location (e.g. C:\) in internet explorer or other browsers address bar.

 

Note:

If you select this option whitout specifing a Save/Open Default Location the Users of your PC will not be able to open nor to save documents not explicitly permitted (that means placed on your Secure Desk)

 

 

Disable Network Access

 

Set this option to avoid users accessing your Computer Network

 

 

Hide Drives

 

Specify the drives that should be hidden from Open/Save/Browse Dialog boxes and Windows Explorer.

 

Example:

 

Your Computer has 2 Hard Disks ‘C:\’ and ‘D:\’, a CD Rom ‘E:\’ and a Floppy Disk ‘A:\”

 

To disable access to Hard Disks specify:                                     C;D

To disable access to the CD Rom and Floppy specify:                 A;E

To disable access to all drives specify:                                        A;C;D;E

 

 

 

            Save/Open Default Location

 

Specify the Default Folder for Open/Save/Browse Dialog boxes. You can browse for a folder or type the Path.

 

Note:

The Folder will be created by Secure Desk if not already present.

 

           

 

Internet Explorer Restrictions

 

           

No Administrative Options

 

                        The User cannot change the Internet  Settings, the Homepage, Favourites etc…

 

            No Advanced Options

 

The user cannot use the Context Menu in Internet Explorer (cannot set/add Favourites , Cannot run the “Save Target As function” etc.)

 

            Disable File Download

 

The user cannot download files from the Internet

           

           

            Disable Internet Explorer related Progrms

 

Disable Programs that can be launched from Internet Explorer such as Mail and Newsreader. Please note that custom programs like ICQ, MSN Messenger cannot be disabled over this Setting

 

Important Note:

This setting will last permanently.

         

            Homepage

 

Type the Startpage for Internet Explorer. The Specified Page will be set  periodically. This functionality has been implemented to avoid users changing the Internet Explorer Startpage trough websites exposing the “set as Homepage” functionality.

 

 

Tools Menu

 

Over the Tools Menu you can access special functions of Secure Desk - such as setting the User Interface Language.

Computer Security > Shell > Replace Windows Shell

 

Here you can completely replace Windows Shell with Secure Desk:

When your PC starts, Secure Desk and Secure Taskbar are loaded (instead of the Windows Taskbar and Desktop) securing your PC according to the definitions in the file specified.

 

Computer Security > Shell  > Restore Default

 

Here you can restore your default Windows Shell

 

Computer Security > Restrictions >  Apply Restrictions

 

Here you can set the computer security according to the settings made under

Computer Security

 

Computer Security > Restrictions > Reset to Default

 

Here you can reset all security restrictions made by Secure Desk

 

Languages > Select Language

 

                        Here you can select the language for Secure Desk

 

            Languages > Restore Default

 

                        Here you can reset the Secure Desk to use the default language (English)

 
Internet Settings…

 

Here you can configure your Internet Settings such as Internet Security, Connections etc.

Here you can view your request code and register Secure Desk

 

 

 

 


Saving Files

 

All Desktops or Toolbars with Security Options you create can be saved to file.

Every Picture and Application you specify will be linked to the Desktop or Toolbar you are about to create. You have to make sure that the specified files are present on the machine or on the specified network share where Secure Desk will run.

 

Please note, that the program icons created automatically by Secure Desk Editor, are rewritten, every time you save a file, to the location where you save your Desktop or Toolbar.

 

Note:

The best tip we can give you, is to create one folder for each Desktop or Toolbar you create and to save its file in that location.


 

 

Secure Taskbar

 

 

 

 

 

Overview

 

Secure Taskbar resembles the functionality of the Windows Taskbar: Secure Taskbar enables the user to switch between application Windows.

 

Secure Taskbar sets the Computer Security specified in the file to be loaded, once Secure Taskbar is closed, the Computer Security will be reset.

 

Secure Taskbar loads when you start Secure Desk in Shell Exchange mode or if you start it from Secure Desk Editor: File > Start > Taskbar and Desktop

 

Secure Taskbar can also be launched by double clicking the desired Secure Desk file

Important Advice!

 

Before you run secure Taskbar make sure to know the password of the file being loaded!

Secure Taskbar can also be started by passing the desired Desktop or Toolbar filename to SecureDesk.exe (Secure Desk)  as command line parameter:

On the File Menu Click New

 

 

To Create a Full Screen, Windowless Desktop

 

Go to Appearance and Behaviour

To Create a Toolbar

Deselect Display Full Screen

            Set Position and Size

 

Set the background color,  text color and background picture

Running a fully secured PC

 

Start Secure Desk Editor

 

Optional: create or change a Secure Desk file and save it

 

Make Sure the computer security is set to fit your needs and be sure to remember the Secure Desk password.

 

On the Tools Menu Click Computer Security > Shell > Replace Windows Shell

 

Select the Secure Desk file you want to load.

 

Close Secure Desk

 

Logoff and Logon again to Windows or restart your computer

 

 

 

 

 

Restore Windows Security and Shell defaults

 

From Secure Taskbar

 

Right click on the Secure Taskbar and choose Close Secure Desk

 

Enter Secure Desk Password then click OK

 

If you want to restore the default Windows Shell then answer with Yes to the question in the message dialog.

 

From Secure Desk Editor

 

On The Tools Menu click on Computer Security > Shell > Restore Default

 

On the Tools Menu click on Computer Security > Restrictions > Reset to Default

 

            Note:

If your trial period is over and you have not registered yet, you can reset the Computer Security and Shell exchange set by Secure Desk on the registration window itself.

 

Start Secure Desk and on the Registration Windows point to Computer Security Menu and Select Reset to Windows Default

 

 

 

Close Secure Taskbar

 

Right click on the Secure Taskbar and choose Close Secure Desk

 

Enter Secure Desk Password then click OK

 


Change User Interface Language

Start Secure Desk Editor

Press Ctrl + L and select the desired language

To reset the language to English start Secure Desk Editor and press Ctrl + E. Restart the Application

 

 Create Icons with transparent background

 

 

To create Icons with transparent background, make your image files with background color magenta: R=255,G=0,B=255

Installation Problems

 

The Problems on Secure Desk Installation are most likely related to Windows Installer:

Secure Desk Icons are Missing

Programs or Links do not start

 

Every file (picture, document, application etc.) that you specify in Secure Desk Editor is linked into the Secure Desk Files. Open the specified Secure Desk file and make sure the file (picture, document, application etc.) in question is present.

 


 

 

 

 

 

Glossary

 

 

 

 

 

Shell

 

Every time you start your PC, the Windows Operating System starts the Taskbar and the Desktop where you can place program icons, folders etc. This is called the Windows Shell.

 

To restrict access to your PC you can let Secure Desk be the Shell of your Computer:

 

Your operating system will still be Windows, but you can completely configure the user interface.
